Walk 1000 Miles

This year I decided to join in with Country Walking Magazine’s “Walk 1000 Miles” initiative. In short, it’s exactly what it sounds like. The campaign encourages people to walk 1000 miles in a year, which you can hit by walking 2.74 miles a day. After that, it’s down to you. Some people count all the steps they take in a day and others choose to count “boots on” miles i.e. just the miles they do on actual walks. I’ve decided to go with the latter, so I include mileage from the school run, and any walks I take, but not pottering around the house, garden or the shops etc.

I had a slow start to the year as I had the kids at home due to schools being closed. We went out on plenty of walks but it takes a lot longer to cover short distances when you’re accompanied by a 4 and 6 year old! However, we still got outdoors and I got a fair few miles under my belt. I’m behind where I should be at this point in the year. I hit 250 miles on 30th April and I should have been there 4 weeks before, however, I’m slowly but surely catching up. Last week I managed a 13 mile walk, and a couple of 5 mile walks.  And after being spotted doing the school run in walking boots (it’s not a treacherous journey to school, I go walking straight after drop off) I have recruited some walking buddies too.

At the moment I’m still walking from my front door, as I’m lucky to have fields, villages and a canal within walking distance, but I am planning some walks slightly further afield in the not too distant future, all being well. If you have any exciting suggestions for routes I could try, or places you like to explore, let me know in the comments.
